What is RSV

According to the American Lung Association and the CDC, RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus) is a respiratory virus. Respiratory viruses are currently at a high in the state of NC and specifically, RSV cases are now higher than in previous years.

RSV causes symptoms like a cold and is usually not life-threatening, but like the flu or the cold, occasionally it can lead to pneumonia and other complications, especially in children. RSV is more common in children, but since there are many different types, it is usually something we do not build immunity against. That means that someone can get RSV numerous times if they are exposed to it through coughing, sneezing, or sharing food or drinks with someone with the virus.

Thanks to the last two years of battling with Covid-19, we are all familiar with viruses at this point. If you or your child is experiencing the below symptoms, come to Med first where we not only have rapid tests for flu, covid-19 but also, for RSV. The symptoms are the same for the three different viruses, so testing is crucial.

Symptoms
  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing
  • Earache

Don’t wait until your child needs a hospital visit. When they start showing the above symptoms, bring them to Med First for an exam and treatment. When your child is not feeling well, you don’t want to go from one appointment to another. Making Med First, your first choice means that you no longer need to go to a second location for a different test or wait days for results. No waiting for a test that has to be sent to a lab because a rapid option is not available, at Med First, as little as 15 minutes gets you the results you need in order to know if you have tested positive for RSV, Covid-19, or the Flu.

Walk-ins are accepted, but to minimize wait times, you can also schedule an appointment. Call our appointment center, text to schedule, or self-schedule your own appointment at any of our 23 locations.
